Fidget Toy Workshop - having fun with sensory tools

Ashokan Ramakrishnan

Our kids are often described as fidgety. They seem to need to move especially at the most inappropriate of times.

And too often, our instinct is to stop them from moving and to make them comply with what society considers as "normal" behavior needed for learning... believing that this is what is needed for them to pay attention ... or at least to be less distracting for the rest.

What if we are wrong ? and what if their brains just need their bodies to move so that they can focus better ?

There is increasing evidence on how fidgeting and movement (both vestibular and proprioceptive) triggers the brain to focus !

For more information on why and how fidgeting helps, check out this video below :

STUDY BUDDY ZOOM SESSIONS

Ashokan Ramakrishnan

Everything is a little more fun and less of a chore when we do it together.

By popular demand, we will be organizing our study-buddy program for tweens (10 to 14 years) over 8 weeks in May/Jun. The sessions will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. During which, we have teen mentors who will supervise your child with their school work over zoom. The session incorporate the Pomodoro Technique broadly as follows :

  • 15 min : Checking-in & setting intentions for tasks to complete

  • 25 min : Round #1 of FOCUSED WORK (to be done individually)

  • 5 min : Taking a break & tweens can clarify questions with mentors (if any)

  • 25 min : Round #2 of FOCUSED WORK (again done individually)

  • 10min : Sharing of the work completed and again tweens can clarify questions with the mentors (if any)

  • 40 min : Playing games together (eg. role-play games like Werewolf as well as online games like uno, squabble, etc).

Please see the dates for the study-buddy sessions below. You do not have to attend all the sessions but do try to at least attend 10 of the 16 sessions. Each session will be held from 4.30pm to 6.30pm.

  • Wk 1 : 9 & 11 May

  • Wk 2 : 16 & 18

  • Wk 3 : 23 & 25

  • Wk 4 : 30 May & 1 Jun

  • Wk 5 : 6 & 8 Jun

  • Wk 6 : 13 & 15 Jun

  • Wk 7 : 20 & 22 Jun

  • Wk 8 : 27 & 29 Jun

Through these Study-Buddy Session, we hope to help our ADHD tweens build up the ability to stay focused through the power peer support. And hopefully, it becomes intrinsic and they will be able to self-initiate and sustain work in the future.

By the way, if you are not familiar with the Pomodoro technique, check out this video :
