9. How can I help the ADHD child cope in school?

9.1. Get approval for extra time during examination using the Psychologist's report. Apply at least 6 months ahead to ensure approval can be granted in time.

9.2. Engage a private tutor or peer tutoring at school

9.3. Chose classes that have a low student-teacher ratio

9.4. Train your ADHD child in positive self-talk e.g. “I did that well

9.5. Use word processor or computer for schoolwork

9.6. Consider enrolling your child into a Montessori class where he can learn things using 5 senses (seeing, hearing, touching, smelling and tasting).

9.7. Find the best and most "interesting" teachers who can help the ADHD/ADD child develop interest in the subject being taught

9.8. Highlight & mark up books

9.9. Prepare summaries of what is read (this is a more active form of reading)

9.10. Use hands-on experience or real-life application in teaching wherever possible. (in contrast to the mainly theoretical, semantic approach used in class.)

9.11. See detailed steps on how to handle other specific problems encountered by the ADHD child in school (e.g. being organised, problem-solving skill, social skills, being bullied, better handwriting, etc.)
