29. What Extra Curriculum Activities (ECA) or Physical Activities are suitable for the ADHD child?

29.1. ADHD children may do less well than their peers in team sports because of their behavioural characteristics (impulsiveness, hyperactivity, disorganisation, lack of social skills etc)

29.2. ADHD children can focus on, and do well in activities that are intrinsically stimulating to them. Hence the key is to give them the opportunity to pursue their passion. Excelling in ECA is one way of building up the ADHD child's self-esteem (which has been battered by “failures” in the classroom)

29.3. Physical Activities & ECA which are suitable for ADHD Children

  • Cycling/jogging (Can consider cycling at Ubin island for older children [Pri 2 & above?], also visit the beach reserve at Chek Jawa)
  • Swimming (Jurong East Recreation Centre [Jurong East St 31] has a great facilities such as playground with water fountains, "fast-moving river", waves and showers at the "beach")
  • Playgrounds (Pasir Ris Park has many playground facilities to keep children of various ages occupied; visit various playgrounds in your nearby housing estates)
  • Table-tennis, Badminton, Basket-ball (Primary 3 onwards)?
    Tai chi or any other martial arts
  • Riding (particularly for those who love animals)
    Involvement in social activities such as scouting, church groups or other youth organisations that help develop social skills and self-esteem
  • Any outdoor activities such as beach, camping, zoo, bird-park, nature reserve, etc.
