18. How can I teach the ADHD child perseverance?
18.1. Teach your child to set clear objectives or have a clear vision of what he wants "You can't get to where you want unless you know where you are going.
18.2. Teach your child to think of different ways for achieving these objectives.
- Encourage your child not to give up too easily
- Explain to them the aeroplane is off-course 98% of the time (partly because of external wind conditions), the pilot have to constantly adjust the flight direction to reach the desired destination
- The same thing happens in real-life, we have to constantly adjust our actions to achieve what we want.
18.3. Teach your child that successful people are those who have failed the greatest number of times
- People gain experience when they fail; They learn important lessons of what does not work when they fail
- Those who never fail are typically those who never try to do anything; They never succeed either.
18.4. Teach your child to have positive thoughts and to be optimistic
- Good and bad things happen all the time in life
- Those who can remember happy events in the past and treasure what they already have will lead a happy life
- Those who only remember bad events in the past and do not treasure what they already have are destined to lead a miserable life
- Do you see a half-full glass of milk or a half-empty glass of milk; Blessed are those who see the half-full of milk
- Joke on being optimistic and pessimistic:
- A mother has a older optimistic son and a younger pessimistic son
- She gave the pessimistic son a expensive model electronic train and the latest mini electric scooter to boost the younger son's outlook in life
- She gave the optimistic son a present which contain a box of "horse-shit" so that the older son will not be overly optimistic in life
- The pessimistic son complained that he might be electrocuted by model electric train and that he might knock someone down with his mini electric scooter
- The mother subsequently asked the older son what he got for his present
- The older son replied: "I am not sure, I think it's a pony and I am still trying to look for it
