16. How can I teach the ADHD child to be more self-reliant and responsible?
16.1. Realise that ADHD children are struggling to be self-reliant and responsible. Be patient and distinguish Dr Jekyll from Mr Hyde.
16.2. Make children sit on "repenting / reflecting / thinking bench" until they can come up with an acceptance alternative behaviour
16.3. Give children opportunities to do and decide things for themselves; Praise creativity and originality
16.4. Teach good "sportsmanship" - It is nobody's fault as to who wins or loses. We just have to do our best.
16.5. Give initiative, and don't take it back
16.6. Teach your child that he writes his own "life story" - what goes on in the "life story" and what does not is pretty much up to "him"
16.7. Get adolescents to compile their "gift / strength list" and their areas needing improvement list
16.8. Reassure late bloomers; Avoid being over-protective and give the children room to make mistakes without fear of failure
16.9. Teach the child to delay gratification to prevent irresponsible obsession with immediate gratification.
