14. How can I help the ADHD child cope with his class work and homework?
14.1. Allow the child to have regular breaks when doing homework (about 10 minutes break after 30 minutes of homework for the older child)
14.2. Have fixed and suitable routine for homework
14.3. Encourage the ADHD / ADD child to estimate and monitor the time required for each assignment. This helps the child to better focus on the required assignment
14.4. Break big assignments into smaller tasks, each with its own deadline e.g. have 2 trays, do homework 1 page at a time, put each completed page into 2nd tray (labelled finished!!!) to give visual satisfaction from work done.
14.5. Highlight & mark up books; Prepare summary of what you read (this is a more active form of reading)
14.6. Read the summary, title, first/last sentence/paragraph before you read the entire article
14.7. Give the ADHD child a reason for paying attention or being interested in a particular topic / subject. For example, learning addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in mathematics is useful when you need to handle monetary transactions in the real world. State the use or purpose of learning a particular subject to enhance the interest of the ADHD child and create opportunities for him to use it in the real world.
