13. How can I help the ADHD child who is being bullied in school?

13.1. ADHD children are usually bullied in school for the following reasons:

  • Their "strange" behaviours are not accepted by their peers and teachers
  • Their social rankings are lower than other students, especially when constantly pin-pointed by teachers for their wrong-doing.

13.2. How parents can help:

  • Talk to the school teacher(s) (especially with the form teacher) to find out more about what is happening in class
  • Explain to the child the possible reason(s) why bullies are targeting him. Explain to the child what he should or should not do in school.
  • Teach the child what he could do when he encounters a bully
  • Most importantly, role-play with the child on what he/she could do when he / she encounters a bully
  • Get the teachers' assistance in appointing model students to watch out for the weaker students. (see item 32.2 on what teachers can do)
  • Be your child's advocate and do not rest until the school takes proper actions to stop the bullying. Get as much evidence as you can – witnesses, injuries etc. Record the dates and details of incidents, backed by medical certificates / psychologist's reports if necessary. If talking to the teachers does not work, talk to the principal. Write in if necessary. It is the school's responsibility to ensure a safe learning environment for every child.
